In 1971 Refuge opened the world’s fi rst refuge for women and children escaping domestic violence. Thirty-fi ve years on signifi cant progress has been made, but sadly one woman in four will still experience domestic violence at some point in their life and two women are killed each week by a current or former partner.

On the second anniversary of the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Act, this important annual conference will bring together Domestic Violence Co-ordinators, the Police Service, Prison Service, Probation Service, Health and Social Care Services and the Voluntary Sector to discuss how to improve protection for victims through effective intervention, support and partnership working.

The conference will also consider the implications of the National Domestic Violence Delivery Plan 2005/06 Progress Report and consider the priorities for the year ahead.

"We all need to take responsibility to bring about change: to change the attitudes of our families, friends and communities and to change the systems we fi nd to support the victims of domestic violence"
Baroness Scotland of Asthal QC Minister of State for the Criminal Justice System and OffenderManagement, June 2006

As Refuge celebrates its 35th year, 35 years since opening the world’s fi rst refuge, this important conferenceprovides an opportunity to remember the thousands of women who have been supported over the last three and a half decades.
