Deputy Prime Minister Candidates agreed on coordinated national strategy to tackle domestic violence

Please find below quote from Sandra Horley OBE, Chief Executive of Refuge in response to reports of the Deputy Prime Minister Candidates agreeing on the need for a coordinated national strategy to tackle domestic violence.

Sandra Horley OBE, Chief Executive of national domestic violence charity Refuge:
"The candidates for Deputy Prime Minister have expressed a commitment to addressing domestic violence – a serious crime which kills two women every week. Their commitment is encouraging and suggests a future of progress and lives saved.

"In particular, we welcome Harriet Harman’s proposal for a single group tackling violence against women. This demonstrates Ms Harman’s long-standing support for women’s rights. We hope that the other candidates follow suit and recognise that domestic violence does not happen in isolation.

"Refuge has been calling for a coordinated national strategy for over two decades and we believe it is urgently needed. To be effective, a vigorous criminal justice system has to work hand in hand with a strategy for responding to and supporting victims."
