Equal Opportunities Commission gets domestic violence on the gender agenda

A new Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) campaign is hoping to bring violence against women to the top of the public agenda.

The Gender Agenda campaign sets out six main priorities for the next decade to achieve gender equality in the UK. One of these goals is to tackle gender-based violence, which includes domestic abuse and sexual assault.

In 10 years’ time the EOC wants to see:

  • That gender-based violence is no longer considered acceptable
  • The criminal justice system tackling gender-based crimes effectively, including: a significant reduction in the incidence of domestic violence; an increase in the proportion of reported rapes that are successfully prosecuted; and more action to prevent trafficking of women and girls for forced prostitution
  • That forced marriage is rare and survivors are better supported
  • Gender-based violence is recognised as grounds for asylum
  • Women and men being treated fairly and appropriately by the criminal justice system in sentencing and prison arrangements
  • That offending rates of young men have reduced
  • That women’s fear of crime is no longer limiting their day-to-day activities outside the home
  • That schools are successfully challenging attitudes that lead to sexual bullying and gender-based violence
