Refuge is the largest specialist service provider of domestic violence services in the country. It opened the world’s very first refuge in London in 1971 and celebrates its 40th birthday in 2011. On any given day Refuge is supporting over 1,600 women and children. It also runs the Freephone 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid.
Refuge runs award winning media and advertising campaigns to raise public awareness, whilst campaigning and lobbying for better provision for women and children experiencing domestic violence.

Refuge’s communications team is responsible for educating the general public, raising awareness of domestic violence, and supporting Refuge’s fundraising and operational activities This is a chance to join this small high achieving team where the postholder can have a real impact in reaching out to women and children who experience domestic violence. The role involves profiling Refuge’s work through media relations, online communications, marketing, advertising, speaking opportunities and our website.
We work in an exciting and fast paced environment. The successful applicant will work proactively responding to the political and news agendas on a regular basis. You will work with a wide variety of media, to broaden Refuge’s editorial exposure nationally and regionally. and support the Director of communications in growing Refuge’s digital communications activity in order to raise our profile and recruit supporters.
The successful applicant will have experience of working within communications and of running social media and cause related campaigns. You will have developed strong copy writing skills across a variety of media and have the ability to manage complex and sensitive media issues.
This is a wide and varied role. No one day is the same at Refuge but it’s interesting and incredibly rewarding.
