Refuge is the largest specialist service provider of domestic violence services in the country. It opened the world’s very first refuge in London in 1971 and celebrates its 40th birthday in 2011. On any given day Refuge is supporting over 1,600 women and children. It also runs the Freephone 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid.

Tower Hill, London

The 24 hour National Domestic Violence Helpline are looking to recruit female* helpline sessional workers to provide support, information and a listening ear to women experiencing domestic violence and to those seeking help on her behalf. The post involves discussing the options available and, if appropriate, referring callers on to refuges and other sources of help and information. We are particularly looking for workers who can work sessionally on the overnight and day shifts including weekends.

The successful candidate will have proven experience of working on a professional helpline providing support and advice to callers, good written and verbal communication, and an understanding of the importance of maintaining professional boundaries. An understanding of current welfare rights/civil/criminal legislation relating to domestic violence is essential as well as the ability to work flexibly on a 24 hour rota.
