Refuge is the largest specialist provider of domestic violence services in the country. It opened the world’s very first refuge in London in 1971 and celebrated its 40th birthday in 2011. On any given day Refuge supports over 1,600 women and children. It also runs the Freephone 24-hour National Domestic Violence Helpline in partnership with Women’s Aid.

We are proud to announce that we will be working in partnership with Lambeth Council as together we launch the new Violence Against Women and Girls Gaia Centre, which will offer a range of innovative  support services for victims of gender-based violence.

To support the delivery of this important project we are looking for highly motivated and committed people to join Refuge and the Gaia Centre team, and have the following vacancy:

c£33,000 per annum, plus benefits

FIXED-TERM CONTRACT until 31/03/2014

This is an exciting new role to work in a broad, innovative team based, providing a range of services to address and meet the diverse needs of survivors of all forms of gender-based violence (including domestic violence, sexual, financial and emotional abuse, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, trafficking, stalking, prostitution and ‘honour’-based violence) within Lambeth.

You will develop a high-quality peer support scheme that meets the needs of survivors of abuse to be delivered by a team of volunteer peer supporters and you will work closely with senior colleagues in Lambeth to build and maintain effective partnerships between the Gaia Centre and a wide range of statutory, voluntary and private sector organisations to improve the coordinated community response to gender-based violence.

You will have demonstrable experience of providing emotional and practical support within the violence against women and girls sector, experience of managing staff, and a clear commitment to securing positive life outcomes for clients and to making the Gaia centre a success.

You will be self-sufficient, assertive and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills combined with empathy and sensitivity to build and develop supportive relationships with survivors of abuse and their children whilst maintaining professional boundaries.

The postholder, will be required to be available to deal with out of hours emergencies.
