Streaming FAQs

Here's a list of streaming FAQs to ensure that your stream for Refuge goes to plan.

A “stream” is an online audio or video broadcasted over the internet, in real-time. A “streamer” is the person hosting the stream.

Not at all, lots of people regularly stream makeup tutorials, cooking classes, singing and much more. If you’d like more streaming ideas, check out our streaming pack.

For livestreaming, we ask that only people aged 18+ stream on our behalf.

There are lots of streaming services you can use including YouTube, Twitch, TikTok and Instagram Live. Please be mindful of each service’s own terms, conditions, and policies.

If you are doing a gaming stream through Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo switch you can install the Twitch app from your game store and login. You will then be able to stream your live game play to your online fundraising page. If you’d prefer to link to your Mixer or PlayStation Live, simply put your stream link in the story section on your page.

If you’re doing a gaming livestream, please be considerate about the choice of game you decide to play whilst fundraising for Refuge. We would ask anyone supporting us to avoid the following games:

  1. Games with misogynistic themes that promote sexist stereotypes or objectify women
  2. Games with sexual violence, that depict or allude to sexual assault or harassment
  3. Games with excessive violence or gore (including FPS games)

If you are unsure if something you want to play or do on stream would be ok, please check with us first by emailing community@refuge.org.uk.

You can set up a Tiltify campaign or JustGiving page to collect donations for Refuge, which you can include in your stream.

There are also the built-in fundraising tools on YouTube and/or Facebook (i.e., YouTube, Facebook donation button, Facebook fundraiser). If you use one of these platforms, please let us know.

Tiltify is a livestream fundraising platform that provides tools for streamers to fundraise for charity. After building your campaign page, you can link your live stream to your social media accounts and start to accept donations. The platform also allows you to create rewards for donors, explain your schedule and goals, and share with your friends to join the fundraising.

There is guidance you can read on JustGiving and on Tiltify on how to overlay your fundraising page onto your stream.

Gift Aid is a scheme that allows charities to reclaim tax on donations made by eligible UK taxpayers from HM Revenue and Customs. This means donations are worth an extra 25% if Gift Aid can be claimed, increasing a gift of £10 to £12.50 at no extra cost to the supporter.

Yes, as long as your donors are UK taxpayers. If you use JustGiving to collect your donations then your supporters will automatically be asked if they’d like to sign up for Gift Aid.

To help you get the word out about your event, we have some great assets you can download including social media graphics.

Any money you raise from your stream will help to ensure that we can continue to support women, and their children in urgent need of help. Whether that’s by helping keep our free 24/7 helpline open or by providing a safe nights stay in a refuge for a woman and her children.

If you have any further questions, you can email our team on community@refuge.org.uk. We’re more than happy to help.
