Refuge at Outernet London
This International Women’s Day, 8th March, we are hosting a free, immersive red flag experience at Outernet London. The huge installation will feature a sea of physical and digital red flags, each displaying a quote from a domestic abuse survivor. The striking visuals will be accompanied by a dynamic soundscape, featuring the voices of well-known actors and TV personalities, including Refuge Ambassadors Olivia Colman and Billie Piper alongside actors Bella Ramsey, Imelda Staunton, Adjoa Andoh and many more. Getting there: Tottenham Court Road is the nearest tube station, accessible via Central, Northern, and Elizabeth lines (exit 4 is closest).
We’ve focussed on red flags for this year’s International Women’s Day because domestic abuse takes many forms, and it can be incredibly hard to recognise for what it really is – especially when it is outside typical assumptions made about abuse.
“Abuse doesn’t always look the way we expect it to [...] No red flag is too small to be noticed”.
Test Your Knowledge
We recently conducted a survey which revealed a gap in the nations’ understanding of the signs of domestic abuse.
The survey revealed that three quarters of UK adults are unaware of the true scale of domestic abuse and that young people are far less likely to recognise certain behaviours as abusive.
It’s important to look out for the signs and share with others in your circles.
