Refuge responds to the sentencing of Dominique Pelicot
Responding to the sentencing of Dominique Pelicot and 50 others for the rape of Gisèle Pelicot, Abigail Ampofo, interim CEO of Refuge, said:
“Amid the global epidemic of violence against women and girls (VAWG) that we are experiencing, it is more important than ever to listen to survivor voices and start conversations that encourage change. As we continue to campaign for the eradication of VAWG, Refuge stands in solidarity with Gisèle Pelicot and her children.
“Refuge is truly horrified by the atrocities committed against Gisèle by Dominique Pelicot and dozens of other men. While we have seen mixed responses to the sentencing lengths, one thing is clear – Gisèle, alongside every survivor of abuse and violence, deserves justice, and we can only hope that going forward, the seriousness of the crimes committed by these perpetrators will not be forgotten.
“Sadly, this is not a standalone case. Every day, women in every corner of the world experience male violence, and we know firsthand that the justice system in England and Wales is failing survivors in countless ways. From inadequate police response to court backlogs and retraumatising trials that trivialise the experience of the survivor, the system that is supposed to protect women is letting them down continually.
“Refuge commends Gisèle for the profound impact she has had on survivors, and we echo her rallying cry for shame to change sides.”
