100 Miles in June for Refuge

1 in 4 women will experience domestic abuse in her lifetime. One woman is killed by an abusive partner or ex every five days, on average. Refuge provides a range of life saving services to help rebuild the lives of women and their children, free from fear and violence. We make sure the experiences of survivors are at the heart of our work and help amplify their voices. Our specialist staff understand the diverse and complex needs of those experiencing abuse and we are experts in the dynamics of domestic abuse and gender-based violence.

A. Yes, this event is a fundraising challenge. Every pound you raise will help Refuge continue to support many thousands of women and their children on any given day. Just £15 could provide a woman arriving at a refuge with the essentials she needs for her first night. Every pound helps!

Q. How do I set up a Facebook Fundraiser?

A. Just click on this link.

Q. How do I get started with my fundraising?

A. Here are 3 tips for your fundraising:

  1. Make a personal donation to your page. This will show your friends and family that you are committed to the challenge and fundraising for Refuge.
  2. Share your page around payday when people are feeling generous.
  3. Make it fun – you could organise a sweepstake asking supporters to guess the total number of steps you will complete during the challenge and donate to your page. You could find a prize for the closest guess (even if it is just a shout out on your page).

Q. How do I raise money?

A. Once you have set up your fundraising page, start sharing it on your social media channels or through email or WhatsApp. Make sure you add a picture to your fundraising page and explain why you are taking part in this event for Refuge. All the money raised on your page will be sent directly to Refuge.

Q. Can I fundraise outside of Facebook?

A. Yes! We also have the option of a JustGiving fundraising page. You can create your fundraising page here.

Q. Is there a fundraising target?

A. There is no set fundraising target for this challenge. We just ask that you raise as much as you can. You could aim for £52, which could provide a mother and her children a safe night’s stay in a refuge. Or increase your target to £200, which could buy a school uniform for a child in one of our refuges for their year at school.

Q. Where does the money go when people donate to my fundraiser?

A. All funds donated to your fundraising page go to Refuge. The money raised from this event will help Refuge support many thousands of women and their children on any given day. Domestic abuse should not be tolerated, and your fundraising will help Refuge provide specialist services and campaign for change.

Q. How do I pay in fundraising?

A. You can donate directly to the 100 Miles JustGiving campaign here. If you have collected the money from others, please ensure you do not tick the Gift Aid box.

Q. When can I start?

A. The challenge starts on the 1st of June. If you need to start a little earlier or later, then that is okay too.

Q. Do I need to provide evidence to the charity that I’ve done the challenge?

A. This is a self-recorded challenge, and you don’t need to prove that you have done the challenge. It is a community coming together, not a competition. All we ask is that you challenge yourself, have fun, and fundraise for Refuge!

Q. What if I don’t complete the challenge?

A. The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. This will vary from person to person, so tailor the challenge however you like. It should be tough, but doable. You should feel satisfied when you finish it! Just do as much as you can.

Q. What if I can’t complete 100 miles in June?

A. If you’re unable to take part in the challenge but would like to still support Refuge, please take time to read how you can organise your own event and the friendly fundraising support you’d receive here: Fundraise your way – Refuge.
