We are challenging you, our incredible supporters to raise £150 by moving 5km every day, for 16 days in memory of the 1 woman killed every 5 days. Whether you run, walk, jog, swim, cycle or roll your 5km. How you move is completely up to you.
Raise £50 and we’ll send you a free Refuge woolly hat — a symbol of warmth and hope you can wear proudly this winter.
Included in your challenge pack is a tealight candle. On the final day, join us and fellow supporters for a special Zoom remembrance event, where we will light our candles together in honour of the incredible women who are no longer with us.
Sign up now and share your progress and check out our specially created page where you can check out inspirational posts by others completing the challenge.

Below are some frequently asked questions about the challenge:
Q. I just signed up, now what?
A. You can share your fundraising page with family and friends and on social media. You can also post updates on how the challenge is going and see what others are doing on our specially created webpage here.
Q. Do I have to fundraise to take part in the challenge?
A. Yes, this event is a fundraising challenge. Every pound you raise will help Refuge continue to support many thousands of women and their children on any given day. Just
£15 could provide a woman arriving at a refuge with the essentials she needs for her first night. Every pound helps!
Q. Why 16 days?
A. 16 days of activism against gender based violence is an international initiative created by the UN which aims to challenge violence against women and girls globally. It starts on the 25th November which is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against women till 10th December which is Human Rights day.
Q. How do I set up a fundraising page?
We are using Just Giving as our main fundraising platform. Just click on this link.
Q. How do I get started with my fundraising?
A. Here are 3 tips for your fundraising:
- Make a personal donation to your page. This will show your friends and family that you are committed to the challenge and fundraising for Refuge.
- Share your page around payday when people are feeling generous.
- Make it fun – you could organise a sweepstake asking supporters to guess the total number of steps you will complete during the challenge and donate to your page. You could find a prize for the closest guess (even if it is just a shout out on your page).
Q. How do I raise money?
A. Once you have set up your fundraising page, start sharing it on your social media channels or through email or WhatsApp. Make sure you add a picture to your fundraising page and explain why you are taking part in this event for Refuge. All the money raised on your page will be sent directly to Refuge.
Q. Is there a fundraising target?
A. We are asking everyone to raise £150 to help fund Refuge’s life saving work. If you need any support you can contact the team on Inmemory@refuge.org.uk
Q. When can I start?
A. The challenge starts on the 25th November, but if you need to start earlier or later, then that is okay too.
Q. Do I need to provide evidence to the charity that I’ve done the challenge?
A. This is a self-recorded challenge, and you don’t need to prove that you have done the challenge. It is a community coming together, not a competition. All we ask is that you challenge yourself, have fun, and fundraise for Refuge! However if you want to record your progress, you can do so on Strava.
Q. What if I don’t complete the challenge?
A. The only thing that matters is that you challenge yourself. This will vary from person to person, so tailor the challenge however you like. It should be tough, but doable. You should feel satisfied when you finish it! Just do as much as you can.
Q. What if I can’t do 5km a day for 16 days?
A. If you’re unable to take part in the challenge but would like to still support Refuge, please take time to read how you can organise your own event and the friendly fundraising support you’d receive here: Fundraise your way – Refuge.
