Collecting donations

Use your wedding or civil ceremony to collect donations for Refuge. Get started in these easy steps:

  1. Set up your online fundraising page with JustGiving.
  2. Set a target. This can encourage your guests to give a bit extra if they know it’s going to get you to your goal. If you’re unsure what target to set, please see our donation list below this section
  3. Add a profile photo. This can boost your donations by 23%.
  4. Share why you have decided to support Refuge on your special day, to encourage your guests to give.
  5. Explain how donations will help Refuge, for guests who may not know about our work with survivors.
  6. Let your guests know you’ll be supporting Refuge in your invitations or other pre-wedding communications.

If you’d like to collect cash donations, speak to our team on community@refuge.org.uk and we can send you some of our free collection tins.

Online gift lists also offer the option for charity donations. If you decide to support us through a gift list, please let our team know on community@refuge.org.uk so we can ensure the donation comes through to us smoothly. Remember to also mention that you will be collecting donations for Refuge when sharing your gift list with guests.

How your donation helps

In 1971, we opened the world’s first safe house for women and their children affected by domestic abuse. Today, Refuge is the largest specialist domestic abuse organisation in the UK, running 44 refuges where women can overcome the impacts of abuse and rebuild their lives – free from fear. These refuges – and our 24/7 National Domestic Abuse Helpline – are desperately needed. Every 120 seconds, someone turns to Refuge for support. We’re determined to be there for every woman who needs us. To do that, we rely on the kindness of people like you.

£52 could provide a woman and her children a safe night’s stay in a refuge

£75 could go towards providing emotional and practical support to three women and their children affected by domestic abuse.

£100 could host a culturally specific celebration like Easter or Eid for mothers and children in a refuge

£500 could run one of our refuges for a day, which provide safe accommodation for women and children escaping domestic abuse; with access to one-to-one emotional and practical support.

£1,000 could provide 40 emergency parcels, providing basic necessities such as toiletries, nappies, food and clothing, for a woman and her children arriving at one of our refuges.

Activities

You could organise fun games for guests, in exchange for a donation to Refuge. This could include:

The Happy Couple Quiz.

Put together a short quiz to see how well the guests know you and your partner. Questions can include how you first met, nicknames you have for each other and your dream honeymoon destination.

Makeup or Mendhi stand

Have a makeup or Mendhi stand, where guests pay a donation to have their faces or hands decorated

Collection tins

Place some collections tins around your venue where guests can donate spare change. You could even print a QR code to your JustGiving page and display these on tables, for cashless donations.

If you would like to pay in your fundraising through cheque or bank transfer please reach out to our friendly team at community@refuge.org.uk.
