Home is Where the Hurt is

This International Women’s Day 2026, Refuge is shining a light on a devastating truth: for many women, the most dangerous place is their own home.

Take a tour around this seemingly picture-perfect house, can you spot the red flags for abuse?

Tigger warning: domestic abuse.

We’re often taught to fear the stranger on the street, but the reality is that for many women home is the most dangerous place.

Across the UK a domestic abuse crisis is hiding in every single neighbourhood. With one in four women experiencing domestic abuse in their lifetime, this is a national emergency that needs immediate action.

It’s difficult to know what happens behind closed doors, and abusers are increasingly using more advanced and harder-to-detect methods to exert power and control – including psychological abuse and the misuse of smart technology. Our film shines a light on these behaviours.

If you or someone close to you has felt unsafe at home because of a current or former partner or family member, Refuge is here for you. Call our National Domestic Abuse Helpline 24/7 on 0808 2000 247 or visit www.nationaldahelpline.org.uk. Every day we support women and their children escaping abuse, and our specialist services save lives.

For a woman experiencing abuse, reaching out for help takes unimaginable courage – but when she does, Refuge is there.

This might be through a confidential call with one of our specialist Helpline advisors, offering a safe night in one of our 65 refuges, or providing expert legal and emotional support through our community outreach services.

It’s support that allows women to find freedom. Freedom from fear. Freedom to live.
